Non-Contact Level Measurement for IBC Chemical Management
LOGAN, UT – Chemical management just got easier, and more reliable. Scientific Technologies Inc., Automation Products Group, has helped to automate the process with DCU-1602 ultrasonic sensors and MP550 low level alarms designed specifically for level sensing in intermediate bulk containers (IBCs).
The DCU-1602 offers a sensing range from 3 inches to 72 inches, and with a 3A SS sanitary fitting option, will work with most any medium. It has a 4-20mA output that goes directly into the PLC that controls the valve to fill the primary IBC. In the event the secondary IBC does not feed the primary IBC, the MP550 will activate causing an 80db alarm and warning light to activate. This allows the process to be shut down and corrected before a flawed product is produced.
One of the more daunting tasks manufacturers face is managing the supply of bulk chemicals. Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) are a primary chemical delivery vehicle, and are often stacked to maximize inventory and minimize floor space. The IBC on the bottom is permanently affixed and plumbed into the application's chemical process, with secondary IBCs placed on top and connected with a gravity feed hose. When the primary IBC is empty a valve is manually turned to empty a secondary IBC into the primary IBC.
While this works in theory there is room for error, as both the valve and purchasing require manual attention. However, utilizing a level sensor such as the DCU1602 from STI, a PLC, and a fill valve, the process can be completely automated. As the chemical in the primary IBC reaches low levels, the valve automatically opens. A secondary IBC is emptied into the primary IBC and a purchase order is sent to the chemical distributor.
