IntellOpt's I-GMAXC is a Gensym/G2 expert system based Intelligent Controller, with a flexible and online changeable combination of common control technologies in one unified controller:

  • Multivariable Predictive Control
  • Nonlinear Control
  • Sequence Control
  • Heuristic Control

For optimal control performance under nearly all process situations -- normal, emergency, start-up, shut-down, mode changeover, etc. The software and technology has been field proven on a Refinery Delayed Coker unit.

The I-GMAXC package is specifically designed to be formulated in terms of safety, quality and economic goals, with ease of controller configuration, tuning and maintenance:

  • Object Oriented Configuration
  • Event Based Automatic Controller Reconfiguration
  • Nonlinear Adaptability
  • Ability to control continuous, discrete and integrating variables
  • Intelligent Messaging
  • Simplified Dynamic Modeling
  • Integration of Optimization with Control
  • Full Online Tuning Capability
  • Multi-platform Transportability

Investment in existing MVPC is protected significantly by:

  • Migrating existing MVPC models automatically
  • Reduced License fee for competitive upgrades

A proprietary pattern search algorithm combined with a Box factorial design can often reduce plant testing by about 80% over conventional method to identify dynamic complex responses, including inverse and zero steady state gain transient responses. Data validation includes heuristics to identify suspected bad data and automatically collate all good data segments.

G2 based reasoning and event detection infers the process operating region/mode and automatically reformulates the MVPC, and changes the control technology mix, the dynamic models, the control limits and tuning constants online to adapt to the new operating region in a multi-state process.

The expert system interprets the controller actions and data flow for both operations and engineering personnel:

  • Control/Optimization priority quantification
  • Tuning Limits and Sizes affecting performance
  • Future predicted violations causing present Control actions
  • Model Mismatch Prediction Error Monitoring
  • Model Controllability Index and identification of uncontrollable transient behavior
  • Sensitivity Analysis

G2 Bridges exist for most DCSs and Real-Time Databases.

Key Benefits

  • A single controller for controlling the process from start-up to shut-down, including multivariable predictive controller
  • Includes advisory system to advise of controller performance and process limits affecting performance
  • Allows migration of existing conventional Multivariable Predictive Controllers to the new generation Intelligent Control
