Honeywell Introduces Integrated Fire and Gas Safety Solution

Innovative Solution Delivers the Highest Degree of Safety and Availability at the Lowest Installed Cost

HOUSTON, Texas, September 10, 2001 -- The Automation and Control Solutions business of Honeywell [NYSE:HON] today introduced a fully integrated Fire and Gas (F&G) Safety solution based on proven Quadruple Modular Redundant™ (QMR) technology at the ISA 2001.

The integrated Fire and Gas Safety solution extends Honeywell's total integrated control and safety solution offering. It unifies into a single solution all protection layers (Basic control, Prevention and Mitigation as mentioned in IEC 61511) required for achieving optimum functional safety for a wide range of industrial applications in the oil, gas, refining, petrochemical and chemical process industries. The integrated Fire and Gas Safety solution delivers the highest degree of safety and availability at the lowest installed cost on the market.

Honeywell's established Fail Safe Controller (FSC®) based on QMR technology is the critical platform for this Fire & Gas solution. FSC QMR executes all required automated safety functions and provides the interfaces and input functions for standard connection of a wide range of fire and gas detection devices that have been certified under Honeywell's multiple vendor interface program (MVIP). The extended alarm and fault information from these devices, together with the high coverage diagnostics of the FSC system, is transferred to the visualization and alarm layer.

The visualization and alarm layer is fully integrated in the TPS or PlantScape® system where all information from the F&G system is merged within the alarm and historian facilities and the operator displays.

The integrated Fire and Gas Safety solution provides the required functional safety with a high safety integrity level. In addition, it provides superior visualization and logging facilities that allow for optimal operator response and accurate evaluations. Because the basic control, prevention and mitigation components are fully integrated, the overall project and ongoing maintenance costs are vastly reduced.

FSC QMR is certified in many leading industrial countries. It is approved by the German TÜV for use in AK1 to AK6 applications, in accordance with the German industrial standard DIN 19250 ("Control technology; fundamental safety aspects to be considered for measurement and control equipment") and the IEC 61508 ("Application of Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industries") SIL1 to SIL3. FSC was also the first industrial safety system certified in the United States for UL1998 and ANSI/ISA S84.01 standards.

Honeywell is the first company certified according to IEC 61508 for design and implementation of safety systems. Honeywell's safety lifecycle consulting and applications engineers are also certified under TÜV's Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) program.

Honeywell Safety Management Systems (SMS) designs and implements safety solutions and provides lifecycle safety services. These services range from process risk classification and process Safety Integrity Level (SIL) validation to lifecycle support services for FSC-based safety solutions. Honeywell offers assistance to customers in complying with ANSI/ISA S84.01 and IEC 61508 standards for functional safety.
