White Paper

Hirschmann posts Industrial Ethernet QoS white paper on Plant Automation.com

Source: Hirschmann
In the past, there were concerns over Ethernet's ability to deliver the levels of deterministic performance demanded by real time Industrial applications and processes. Over the past 25 years Ethernet has evolved to such a degree that these concerns are no longer valid.

Even though Industrial Automation (IA) networks support a broad spectrum of applications and processes, Ethernet can meet or exceed over 98% of IA network requirements.

This change has been brought about by technology advancements in three key areas:

  • Ethernet switching
  • Increased speed 10, 100 & 1000Mbps
  • Quality of Service (QoS)

It is a combination of these three factors that enable IA network designers to build deterministic networks that are both high in performance and extremely resilient.

This white paper from Hirschmann (Pine Brook, NJ) describes the drivers for change that has brought about a need for Ethernet Quality of Service (QoS). QoS is a way to allocate resources in network switches and routers so data gets to its destination quickly, consistently and reliably. Click here for more information.
