Compact Actuator Engineered For Heavy Duty Service And Tight Space

Biffi-Compact-Actuator

Biffi Italia announces the launch of a new series of compact, quarter-turn pneumatic actuators. Ideally suited where space is restricted, the new TP range specifically targets ball, butterfly, plug or damper-style valves in heavy duty on-off and modulating service where dimension and weight constraints limit customer options.

The distinctive helical spline mechanism transforms linear piston motion into quarter-turn actuation. This maximizes efficiency and optimizes overall equipment dimensions compared to conventional scotch yoke actuators. The range has been designed and engineered to generate high output torques up to 60,000Nm for operation in temperature ranges from -60°C to 100°C. With an integrated spring within the cylinder, the compact design features the same dimensions for double-acting or spring return; spring to open or spring to close operations. Each actuator can be engineered to meet individual customer needs, with the customizable helical profile able to suit valve-specific torque characteristics.

Biffi has developed its new TP compact actuator series using 3D modelling and virtual prototyping methodologies. Finite element analysis (FEA) and extensive testing ensures that all components are proven and optimized for rigorous and robust service requirements. The safe and reliable design features low hysteresis and high responsive modulating service, with bearings manufactured from bronze or sintered bronze and impregnated with PTFE to provide low friction, accurate positioning, smooth operation and extended service life.

The new TP compact actuator range provides consistent and reliable service with the capability to meet stringent standards and approvals. These include environmental protection approval for the actuator housing in line with IP66/IP67M and NEMA type 4/4X/6 degrees of protection and compliance with the PED/ATEX/API 6A PR2 standards. Extensive testing ensures the range is also suitable for SIL 3 applications.

Engineered for harsh environments and severe service, the fabricated carbon steel housing is completely weatherproof and provides maximum strength. The internal coatings, chrome-plated piston rod and electroless nickel-plated cylinder bore offer high corrosion resistance and minimal friction. With the application of Biffi’s industry specific external coatings, the TP compact actuator meets all corrosion resistance requirements for on- and off-shore installations.

“Our new range of compact actuators represents the latest innovation to meet our customers’ changing needs,” comments Paolo Baroni, global marketing manager, Biffi. “Plant operators in the oil and gas industries are looking to maximize efficiency and minimize plant footprint. Developing new technology which provides robust and reliable service within a smaller space offers practical benefits to our customers reducing overall plant construction and operating costs. We have invested in extensive design and engineering work to ensure our customers have confidence in the performance and operational capabilities of the new range.”
