The City of Houston Wastewater Operations Branch is charged with protecting public health and the environment by providing wastewater services through treatment of wastewater generated by residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The branch operates and maintains 40 wastewater treatment plants that are responsible for treating an average of 277 million gallons per day, and 420 lift stations over a 650 square.
The branch has a number of water measurement stations that monitor both the flow rate and the level of water in critical storm drains. This data is used to avoid flooding in the downtown Houston area by diverting the water accordingly during heavy rains.
