Walldorf Germany /PRNewswire/ - SAP NEWSBYTE - SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced that Schindler has gone live with manufacturing solutions from SAP to streamline the company's plant operations. A leading global provider of elevators, escalators and related services, Schindler selected the SAP® Manufacturing Execution application to optimize productivity and plant performance, driving closed-loop manufacturing for greater transparency, reliability and global product traceability. The application will also serve as a standard solution across Schindler's electronic division to serve its wide customer base. As part of a broader "idea to performance" initiative, SAP solutions were created to help manufacturing companies bring new and individualized products to market faster by connecting enterprise systems with shop floor machines for a holistic view of the business.

Schindler's innovative and environmentally friendly access and transit-management systems make an important contribution to mobility in urban societies. Schindler mobility solutions move 1 billion people every day worldwide. But manufacturing processes for the Schindler Electronics plant that produces the electronic components for elevators faced challenges in limited transparency and the cost of legacy shop floor systems. In daily operations, such as the production of printed circuit boards, difficulties arose in retrieving products in global shipments and retrieving full detailed product traceability. Schindler recognized that this was a broader issue within its manufacturing base, and needed a future-proof solution that would be easy to roll out across all of its geographies.

Schindler implemented integrated solutions for responsive manufacturing from SAP to replace legacy software. Future-proof SAP Manufacturing Execution helps the electronics division manufacture more quickly based on more efficient processes so that the plant becomes a model for other subsidiaries, specifically in China. The application also enables integrated shop floor operations with end-to-end business processes in real time to increase global coordination. Other benefits include optimized operator productivity by helping reduce up to 75 percent of the time spent on entering data into the shop floor system. The clear work-in-progress integration to the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application SAP® ERP enables visibility from top floor to shop floor.

"Today, we spend 18 to 20 percent of the shop floor operator time in interaction between the operator and our manufacturing execution system," said Alessandro Calidonna, IT Applications Manager, Schindler Electronics. "Now with the introduction of SAP Manufacturing Execution and the touch screen POD, our goal is to reach the three percent maximum interaction."
