Computer-Aided Work Sampling with Microsoft Excel™) has been developed to assist in the collection, management, analysis, reporting and graphical charting of work sampling data. The original CAWS program was designed in 1978 for the Michelin Tire Corporation to run on an IBM mainframe computer system, using "Port-A-Punch" stylus-punched 80 column cards and magnetic tape. The current implementation of CAWS/E is significantly improved from the original version and takes advantage of superior user interface and flexibility of the modern desktop or notebook personal computer. A recent addition to the CAWS/E arsenal is the new Handheld PC. These "shirt-pocket" sized computers truly help to make the system portable and totally integrated. The program's integration with Microsoft Excel™ makes it easier for the experienced Excel™ user to further customize and analyze CAWS/E results. Standard reports may be printed by anyone who knows how to use the File/Print feature of Microsoft Excel™. Advanced Excel practitioners can use the powerful data (Pivot Table) and charting (Chart Wizard™) features of Excel™ to graphically portray trend and comparative work sampling results.
